Society of Urban Perambulators: Downtown Jeffersonville
March 29, 2025
10:45 am (meet up at Coffee Crossing on Spring Street)
11:00 am (walking tour will begin)
The next Society of Urban Perambulators (SoUP) event will take us through Jeffersonville’s historic downtown and to its periphery to see how Southern Indiana’s largest city is developing. Through this tour, we will get to see some classic urban development patterns, parklets, new culture-focused development, and more.
We will once again be meeting at Coffee Crossing (228 Spring St Ste 105, Jeffersonville, IN 47130) at 10:45 am. We will also be able to pour over into the space next door at the SoIN visitors center, where we will hopefully get to talk a bit with the visitor center manager, Seth Lieber.
Around 11am, we will depart towards Chestnut Street. We will be joined by Jeffersonville’s Planning Director, Chad Reischl, who will stop and talk with us about multiple interesting components of the city’s urban fabric as we walk. On Chestnut, we will get a look at a past street redesign project and see some of Jeffersonville’s many parklets.
As we pass Chestnut, we will arrive at the headquarters for arc, a prominent real estate developer in Southern Indiana. They will give us a tour of their new office.
After arc, the tour group will move towards the northern side of downtown, passing Big Four Station for a brief discussion with Mr. Reischl. We will be heading towards Jeffersonville’s NoCo (North of Court) Arts District, a congregation of some very cool public spaces, public art, and cultural institutions. As we walk through the arts district, we will be guided by the city’s Director of Public Arts, Kathleen Wang. The first stop in NoCo will be the Paint Box Garden/Story Trail and the neighboring NoCo Arts Center.
Following the Arts Center, Kyleigh Hublar from Maker13 will show us around their creator workshop across the street.
Right across the street from Maker13 and the Arts Center is The Depot, a new venue and event facility operated by the city. Amber Powell, The Depot’s manager, will show us around the venue space.
The NoCo district has two new public/park spaces that we will get to take a look at. First up is Picasso Pointe, a family-focused pocket park across the street from the Arts Center with a plethora of art integrated into its design. Just down the street is the very new Fall’s Landing Park, another public space with a focus on art. The park also helps to alleviate flooding in the area.
As we walk back towards our starting point, we will pass by the office of real estate firm Denton Floyd. Chad Reischl will talk with us a bit about the historic building and how it was preserved.
Things will wrap up at Union Restaurant and Gameyard, close to where we started.
The Society of Urban Perambulators is a program by the Urban Design Studio at the University of Louisville. There is a SoUP Facebook Group if you are interested in joining. The events are free and open to the public, but we ask that you RSVP with our Director, Patrick Piuma (patrick.piuma@louisville.edu), so we know how many people to expect and who to contact if event details change.
The first 20 or so attendees will get a small souvenir generously provided by Maker13 when we arrive at their workshop. We hope to see you there!
