Working with Citizen Scientists to Measure Our

Urban Tree Canopy

"Louisville is getting warmer at a faster rate than other cities. One of the best things we can do in cooling the city down is to plant more trees, primarily in areas with lots of concrete like downtown. We also need to take better care of the trees we already have, especilly the newly planted."

"Having good data on our urban trees is key, so we can know where to plant new trees and keep track of the health of our urban forest."

In the Spring of 2013, during Mayor Fischer's week of service, a group of dedicated volunteers came together to help map and collect data for all of downtown Louisville's trees. Some of these volunteers came back and worked through the summer of 2013 to finish collecting data on location, size, planting environs, and health. The result is downtown Louisville's first open digital snapshot of its canopy."Louisville is getting warmer at a faster rate than other cities. Very special thanks to the volunteers that made it happen...

We believe that the more we share data, the more opportunity we have to solve the problems facing our communities. In the spirit of openness and collaboration, we are making the 2013 downtown tree survey data set available for you to download, analyze, and explore. In the coming months we hope to develop a strategy for updating the downtown tree data set annually, and working with groups that want to survey the trees in other cities & neighborhoods. Get in touch with us at udstudiolou@gmail.com for more information.
